News has been received from Australia that Miss Olive Thorpe has been one of the successful entrants for Melba’s Grand Opera Chorus for which there were fire hundred entries. Tito rehearsals have commenced and fifteen to twenty operas will be produced in Italian and French. Airs L. llunnibell, of King Street. Rangiorn, who has been on an extended visit to her daughter in Auckland, Mrs J E. Hartland. returned to her homo yesterday accompanied by .Mrs A. G. HunnibeJl, of Rangiora. who has also been paving a short visit to Auckland and Wellington. The Kentucky Jazz Club held their weekly dance in St Saviour’s Hall, Queen Street, Sydenham, last Tuesday evening, where the couples danced to enjoyable music supplied by Davies’s Jazz Band. The hall was artistically decorated and shaded by coloured lights ami streamers. During the'evening Miss Elsie Talbot sang Sweet and Low." while Miss Valerie Barrow supplied the music. A dainty supper was served, and extras were played for by Miss Valerio Barrow and Mr Lon Large. The committee consists of Messrs Claude Barrow. George Mackio, Clarence Davies and A. Caskie. The annual report in connection with •St. Saviour’s Guild presented to a meeting last night stated that the homes in Timaru and Shirley were now so full that it was impossible to admit more children until the proposed, new dormitory at the former and the tensive enlargements in progress at the latter were built and completed. The statement of leceipts and payments showed that i.'7b39 13s 3d had been collected for the special building fund. A banquet was held on Monday last under the auspices of the Y.P.C.A., Tennyson Street branch. The chair was occupied by Air Law. who proposed the toast of " Our Country.'* which was suitably replied to by Air Robertson. The next toast was proposed by Mr W ilkins, •• The Ladies,” who replied through the- medium of Mrs Robertson. The next toast was to “ Our Visitors.” by Miss Tliielo, who stated that, on behalf of tho Tennyson Street. Y.P.C.A , she was very grateful for their support. Mi Dunn, of the Lin wood branch, ortho Y.P.C.A.. stated in replying that the members should be loyal to their asso- | caution.
