Miss Woodham. of the Nelson Hospital, went back to Nelson on Saturday. Among the evening attractions of . Carnival Week is a ball to take place on Wednesday evening at the Art Gallery. The preliminary arrangements have been completed by Mrs E. Calson, the orgapiser. and the proceeds of the hall will go towards the Church of England Hospital funds. An enjoyable concert was given in ' Joy land, at New Brighton, bv the children of the New Brighton United Band of Hope. The programme consisted of piano solos and duets, character sketches, hoop and scarf drill, character songs, vocal solos, humorous recitations, action songs and a dialogue. Several members from the Canterbury Band of Hope Union were present, and during the evening the president of the union. Mr E. A. M. Leaver, presented the silver challenge shield ami the Cutler Memorial Shield, which were won at the recent competitions by the New Brighton Band of Hope. The championship medal for girls was also presented to Joan Hughes, together with an enlarged photograph of the winner, presented by Air Turner, of the Alva Studio. Great credit is due to Mrs Hull and her helpers whose time and patience have brought the New Brighton children to their present state of proficiency. Dixieland presented a very gay uppearance on Saturday evening, when sixty couples danced to music supplied oy Sutherland’s Jazz Band. The lounge and supper rooms were artistically decorated with large bowls of arum lilies and ranunculi, and baskets of flowers j were suspended from the ceiling. 1 Among those present were : Mr and ! Mrs Cotterill wore a beautiful black frock handsomely trimmed with jet, and a jet ornament in her hair to match. Miss Betty Cotterill wore a charming frock of mauve georgette heavily embroidered in crystal beads, a flowered tiara in her hair. It is quite unique, being made of fine net. which shows. the embroidered ribs very plainly.
