PAIUiS. The Papa mii Burgesses’ Association (Mr S. K. M’Oarthy in the chair), unanimouslv adopted the following resolution on Wednesday v evening ••That the association now respectfully requests tho council to take the necessary steps to secure for a park the site of about eight acres behind Ivorv’s cool stores, having a right-of-way'from Harewood Head, and two entrances from St James Avenue. This section was tho first chosen, but at the time, it was withdrawn from 1 sale, in order to establish a nursery, i which has not been done as yet.” To prove that the Papanui Sports ! Club is sincere, ibis body unanimously adopted the following resolution on Monday evening:—“ The PapanuiHarewood Athletic and Cycle Club pledge themselves that if the poll is carried for Langdon’s Hoad park, they will take the necessary steps and work i for the park area to he included in the city.” There were preset Messrs H. The Sunday School anniversary was held last Sunday, and was well at-* tended. The Revs J. Napier Milne, T. H. Burton, and H. Ryan conducted the various services, and a feature of each service was tho singing of the children under their conductor. Air AY. AVtimer. ATiss Benny acted ns organist, and the pianist Avas Afiss E. Hill. On Thursday evening a public tea was held, followed by a social which was largely attended. Songs were given by the children. The scheme for tho re-building of the Sunday School, the Rev Ryan was able to report, had been well bupijor'ted. PRESBYTERIAN. The Presbyterian Y.M.B.C. held a successful concert on Saturday evening, when various items were rendered by the boys. The programme concluded with a playette based on an his- | torical Highland episode. The proceeds were devoted to missions and class needs. BOWLING. Papanui found tho opposition too strong against United on Saturday, only Ryan’s rink (Henderson, J. Quigley, S. Al s Donald, Evan) were successful. The Alatson Badges changed hands recently, S. Al’Donald and Ryan defeating J. Quigley and Baldwin by seven. The first three heads went to the honlders, but the next brought in six for the challengers, and after that they did not look back. TENNIS. A meeting of St Paul’s Tennis Club committee was held on AA'ednesday. Air L. Jones was in the chair. Six one. guinea trophies had been presented for competition, and it was decided that all entries must be in the hands of the match committee by November 10. After Christmas it‘is intended to run a ladies’ aud men’s championship, and to hold a joint handicap tournament with tho Papanui Club. 1

THE LIBRARY. The Papanui Liorary ball and progressive euclire ou Tuesday was a wontierlul success. It was held in the Memorial Hall to raise funds for furnish ing the liorary. Those responsible are to be congratulated ou the large attendance, which more than exceeded expectation, and the work of furnishing is now in the hands of Mr Rutledge. The hall presented u very gay appearance with its many coloured streamers and beautiful pot plants, making a pleasing background for the many pretty irocks worn. The prize-winners were: —Mrs W. W. Taylor. Mrs 1) Roberts,. Mjr S. Munro and Mr Barry, Mrs Hall winning the cake. The committee wish to thank Mr Fletcher and all those who so freely gave contributions and refreshments,

Reynolds, in presenting the prizes, mentioned the splendid work done by the ladies’ committee,, of which Mrs T. H. Hall was convenor and Airs Taylor a very efficient secretary. PERSONAL. Through the kindness of Airs Dalgety. Airs Boulton, Aiiss CToudesley and the Ala,\or, several of tho Kannordale soldiers were enabled to bo present at the Papanui Library social. Airs JO. Blair is still under tho caro of tho doctor. Alessrs Comyns, F. Smith, A. AVright played extras at the recent big social. Air AV. Marshall, who recently underwent an operation, is home again,, but still confined to hie bed. Aiiss P. Boyce, Alatson’s Road, who has been ill with pleurisy, is now about again.

Airs S. M. Temple, who organised the recent gala at Rannerdale, is verv pleased with its great success. Sufficient was raised to enable the disabled soldiers to again enjoy a seaside holiday. CARNIV A I On Monday evening a meeting of the committee was held, Mr R. •> Pugh in the chair. The secretary, Mr T. FT. Clough, reported that 1V1» George Witty had accepted the position of patron. In connection ■with the carnival for their Christmas meeting prizes have been donated In, the following firms: —Rink Taxis. Grainger's, Scott Bros.. Adams, and the agents for the following cars and motor-bikes. Dodge, Ford, HarleyDavidson. Indian, and B.S.A. Iho programme includes—" Best decorated motor-car or lorry, £5 os; motor-cycle and side-chair or delivery. £2 2s, hikes (ladies’ and gentlemen’s), £1 Is. Special prizes arc offered for decorated push-chairs, wheelbarrows, etc. The club have been allocated the two mile championship for Canterbury, also the thirty-mile road race. PAPANUI. &CHOO.L The bazaar in connection with the Papanui School was a groat success, and over £SO was realised. In the evening t-lie balance of the goods was auctioned and following that, an enjoyable little dance was Jicici. BICYCLE RACE. A large crowd saw ihc start and finish of the Papanui Cycle Club’s ten mile road race on Tuesday evening. Messrs R. Rickerbv and F. Beil saw the fifty-five contestants away off their proper marks. Mr W. Smith acted as starter. A. Leathern from scratch was the first home, closely followed by Henderson, a few seconds in front of M’Grath. Mitchell secured fastest time of the unplaced division. SOCIAL CLUB. A return night to the ladies was given last week, the successful euro winners were Mrs J. H. Reynolds first, Mrs I>. Roberts second, and the consolation prize went to Mrs Costello Ai ter wards songs were given by Misses J.oberis, Thompson, Wilson, anti Kick rrbv. Mr .1, Bnrborough, and Mrs C Smith, who played the aceompaniments, also played for the dance later A new billiard tournament started during the week. ~ BELFAST. In connction with the Belfast Presbyterian Church a special meetiim ~i tlie Ladies’ Missionary Guild was lield m the Church Hall. Mrs Biekerstaff presiding. Mrs Nelson sang a solo. Mrs Bickerstaff introduced Nurse Doull who had come to tell of her work amoim the Maoris. Nurse Doull thanked the ladies for their kind reception. The ad dress, which was most interesting, had its humorous as well as its spiritual side. When the address was concluded ... collection was taken amounting to £3 I6s 6d. This was given to Nurse Doull to help a fund to build «a technical col - lege. which the Presbyterian Church hopes to erect at Waimana for the training of Maori boys.
