(Special to the “ Star.*’) M ANGANUI, November 3. Interviewed at Wellington, Paddv Hannan expressed surprise at the attitude taken up by James Paddoti. the world’s champion, towards a match in New Zealand. Hannan states that hs challenged the winner of the PaddonHadfield race last July, with a provison that in the event of Paddon proving thj winer, he was to come to New Zealand Paddon later replied saving that lie would race iu New Zealand if he was allowed £3OO expenses, but stipulated that the race must be rowed on the Wanganui River. Hannan claims that the Auckland course, on which he pro posed to row, is an excellent one. situated on the upper reaches of the harbour, between Greenbithe and Riveihead. However, Hannan evidently overloks the fact that Paddon was conceding a lot to agree to come to the Dominion to row for the title, as he would be quite within liis_ rights as champion in insisting on any challenger for the title going to Australia to row him, and then, in addition, he could name his own course, providing it was a fair Naturally. Paddon stipulated the M anganui course because he knows it to be a good one, with every prospect of yielding a big gate. It was hardlv likelv, after agreeing to come to the Dominion, Paddon was going to allow Hannan to choose hi.-; own cou,.-;- The proposed race between M’Devitt anti Hannan will, if it eutuates. prove more interesting than the Paddon-Han-nan match would, as the latter could have no possible chance on performances against Paddcn. So far as the title they propose to row' tor. which is led the Austral asian championship, no such title is recognised. It was never heard of be fore the Hannau-Felton race. Still, if M’Devitt and Hannan do meet at Auck land the race should be worth seeing
