RACES AT LYTTELTON. Interesting: yachting wan seen in the first cup races of tho season of the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club on Saturday. The first class yachts. although only four of the six left their mooringrß. provided a keen contest, and interest ran high as there is little unanimity of opinion as to which boat. Miro, Annis or Waimana. will bo the faster this season. Annis has had a new sail laced on, while Miro is the recent arrival from Dunedin, which won easily at Diamond Harbour a week before. Annis Could have done without her handicap allowance in the big race for ebc beat the scratch boat, Waimana, which was conceding bet* 2min, by SOsec. Waterbeetle won the second class yacht race, in which seven boats competed. The wind .was light from the north-east when the final flag was lowered lor the big boats, at 3.15 p.m. Kia Ora (smin) had a slight lead from Annie (2min), while Waimana was third across, she being over towards the other breakwater. Miro (Jmin) was last to get away, but she was travelling fast. Kia Ora was first to round the pile light, the order of the others still being the same. Annis continued on the port tack along the lee shore, while the remaining trio stood over for the breakwater. The three were close together when tnc pier was reached, Kia Ora, well to windward, having got a lead of losec on Miro. with Waimana another oscc behind. On the port tack Waimana went to windward of the Kia Ora. When near the Diamond Harbour point Aunis came about on another board, the others continuing on the port board. After a long beat from Gladstone Tier, Kia Ora turned when off Purau Bay, while the Annis, which had again altered her course on to the port ta-ck when near the three other cutters, followed a few moments later. Hie way in which Waimana kept up to wind was excellent and she passed Kia Ora. At the Ripa Island buoy Annis rounded with a lead of lSsec on Waimana and 140 sec on Kia Ora. Miro was lying last, another lOOsec behind. Spinnakers were shaken out for th© run up to tho pile light, which was rounded at the following times:—Annis 4. hr Oinin Csec, Waimana 4hr Oznin lOsec, Kia Ora 4hr Imin 45sec, Miro 4hr 2min 80sec. Annis's skipper then adopted the sametactics as in the first round. He headed for Purau Bay again. Waimana followed suit for about 2min, when she-qame across towards Lyttelton. Kia Ora continued on further, but soon came on to the starboard thrash. Miro, which was well back, made a beat towards the breakwat.ei as soon as she had passed the light, and when on the opposite leg crossed the- Kia Ora. Annis was sailing beautifully along the lee hills. Waimana was pointed c)ose to the wind on the beat down the harbour, with Kia Ora standing over towards tho Ripa Island fort. A slight lead on Miro was shown by the Kia Ora when the two passed again. Purau was reached in the one beat from the light by Annis, which had to make several legs before she could round the buoy. Waimana was still on th© starboard board. Annis came about first, at 4hr 25min 3Csec. Waimana’s time being 4hr 25min 48sec, Miro's 4hr 31min lOaec. and Kia Ora’s 4hr 3lmin 45sec. Annis gained Qsec on the run to home, the finishing times being:—Annis, 4hr 89m in 10sec; Waimana, 4hr 39min 30aec: Miro, 4hr 45min IGsec; Kia Ora, 4hr 45miu 30sec. The awards were:—Annis (A. Miller). 2min, 1; Waimana (T. Harkess), scr. 2, Kia Ora (J. Collins.) 3rr*n, 3; Miro (J Waddell), imin, 4. a good start, at 3 p.m., for their race, twice round the course. Paheka was ]at« in getting away and' at the end of the first round she withdrew, as did ario Huia. Waterbeetle was first across the line, foi lowed by Shadow, Linnet and Cherub, which is the new name for Wirette. The pile light, was only reached when Phyllis struck trouble, Her peak halyard . being carried away. Waterbeetle. who did not carry a spinnaker, drew away from the remainder of the fleet and was "Being tied to her moorings when the next. boat. Cherub, appeared, headed by Linnet and Phyllis.
