WEST SPREYDON TENNIS AND DEBATING CLUB. The tennis courts of this club were opened- last Saturday afternoon by the president, Mr T. W. Rowe. The club has ben constituted with a trust to hold four social functions each year and to pay the proceeds from these to Dr G. J. Blackmore for the benefit the dependents of any destitute patients affected with tuberculosis. Mr Rowe, in the course of his remarks, j referred to this charitable side of the club’s activities, which last year eu- ] abled £3O to be paid over to Dr Blackmore. After expressing his bejst wishes for a prosperous season, he declared the season open. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of the club. SPREYDON AMATEUR SWIMMING ! CLUB. This club held an official opening last Saturday, a good muster of members being present. The club has an active membership of seventy and it is intended to hold a club carnival an early date. The following are the officials of the club for 1923-24:—Patron, Mr G. Witty. M.P. ; president, Mr W. Smithy vice-presidents, Messrs Freeman, Chambers, Thomas and Smith; club captain, Mr J. Al’Kenzie ; secretary. Air W. H. Wild; committee, Mesdames Smith and Wild, Messrs Voss, Jones and Prestidge. SOMERFIELD SCHOOL. In order to assist the school picnic • funds the committee has decided to hold a jumble sale in the city on Saturday, November 24. It is to be hoped that all interested will help by sending clothing, books, ornaments, vegetables, j fruit, jams, etc. SPREYDON CRICKET CLUB. The club played a friendly match against Sunnysido on Labour Day, Sunny side winning bv 56 runs on the first innings. For Spreydon Cocks (24). Roberts (43) and Marson (16) batted best, and for Sunnyside Hibberd (43 retired), Porter (39) and Pitt (51). Marson secured most wickets for Spreydon and Porter for Sunnyside. The club is holding its annual dance this evening, when trophies won last season will be presented and a presentation made to Air J. Wardel, an esteemed member of the club who is leaving fo r the North Island. SPREYDON BAPTIST CHURCH, j On Sunday next the Spreydon Bap- { tist Church will hold its fifty-seventh ’ ; anniversary. The preacher morning mid evening will be the Rev C. Matthews, of Ashburton. A special feature of the service will be the singing by a large choir usder the conductorship of Mr D. Petrie. On Monday the Rev J. J. North will speak on his recent trip

to the Old Land and Europe. An excellent programme has been prepared and supper will be served at the close of the evening. On Saturday afternoon last the Tennis Club opened the season in the Alans© grounds. There was a good attendance, iscluding Rev J. and Airs Takle, of India. Rev A. Stuarr, and Mr and Airs Voss. The Rev E. E. Smith president of the club, declared the season open and a most enjoyable afternoon followed. Tea was served on the lawn by the ladies of the club. The secretary, Air F- Smith, has prepared . an attractive programme for the comj ing season. | SPREYDON LAWN TENNIS CLUB, j Friendly games amongst the members took place on the courts last Saturday, and on Labour Day. On Aionday the three courts were occupied all | * ADDINGTON SCHOOL. | The Addington School Committee ! wrote to the Education Board asking that the question of overcrowding should receive immediate attention. The board resolved to urge on the department the necessity for the erection of a school at Lyttelton Street, Spreydon. Although temporary class-rooms have been erected, still the Addington School is verv much overcrowded. Two of the rooms have from 95 to 100 children in each, where there should only be 50. The department acquired about four acres at tho comer of Lyttelton and Cobham Streets some years ago. and it is to be hoped that a school ; will soon b© erected on this site. | STREET lAiPROVEMENTS. It is pleasing to noto that the City Council is cutting down the fir trees in Jerrold Street, on the piece of land acquired for street widening. PERSONAL. ; Af.iss A. Al’Clure, assistant niistrees : of Addington School, is resigning her position owing to her approaching marriage. Alls Al’Clure has endeared herself to the children, and she will bo missed very much at the school. Air P. J. Dowd lias; sufficiently recovered to leave the sanatorium, but will be unable to resume teaching at the Addington School. Air D.
