SUMNER CLUB OPENS SEASON. The season of the Sumner Rowing Club j was opened at Redcliffs this afternoon in 1 fine weather, and before a large gathering. Mr C. M. Ross will said Ihat the past i season was one of the most successful the j club had had. They had a hard row to hoe since the inception of the club five years ago. A rowing club had to find all gear, whereas a sailing club had only to find the shed aud members found the gear themselves. An idea of the value^of^the was known that insurances amounted to £7OO, although the actual membership was only twenty. Last season the club added a, new double scull boat. The cost of competing was heavy for the club and it was absolutely necessary that the club should register as many wins as possible. Wiflx tlie present new gear he hoped that that might he accomplished. He was glad to say that it had been proposed to open the club to lady members, who would have the use of the pleasure boats. Mr Nicholson, the Mayor of Sumner, had donated a silver medal for the most improved rower each year. He had much pleasure in asking the Mayor to open the season Mr Nicholson said it was a great pleasure to him to open the club. He honed the end of the season would be as happy as the beginning. 'Sumner contained some of the best sports in the Dominion, and he considered rowing to be a stepping-stone to further things. A double scull race was rowed, the result being as follows:—M’Carthy and Prebble 1; Peters and Dodds 2.
