PRICE OF BACON.

A RAPID ADVANCE. An extraordinarily rapid advance in the wholesale price of bacon has taken place during the past few weeks, the increases amounting to fivepence a ]b. The matter is causing, some concern among grocers and the opinion is freely expressed that the increases have not been justified by tho prices paid for pigs at the markets. “Tt is quit© time the Board of Trade looked into the matter and mad© a thorough investigation of the bacon position,” said one- grocer. He added that the bacon eurers seemed to be able to do just what they liked and the public were not getting a fair deal from them. Although the wholesale price of bacon had been, advanced by fivepence a lb, there has only been an average increase in the price of bacon pigs at the Addington market of "lid or 2d a lb from August 1 to October 24. The average price a 1b was 7d to 7£d on August 1 62d to 7d on August 29; 9d to lOd on September 26. and 8-id to 9d on October 24. During the past few weeks when bacon prices have been rising the demand for bacon pigs has been firm, but values have not adRetailers have not yet passed the full amount of the wholesale increases on to the public. The current price for best rashers is Is 6d a. lb. but th© price will probably rise to Is 9d in the near future, unless the bacon eurers reconsider the position.
