AUSSIE CRICKET TEAMS.
BY SINBAD. The men who control all of MaoriJand’s cricket were keen on a visiting team; the Aussies, however, declined them to pick it, so that is the end of the scheme. Our wish for a side representing Australia, it seems, was predestined to crash ; the whole mooted tour, (which would not be a failure), was blown out for reasons of cash. “ How can our Clem Hills and our blossoming Trumpers." thus argued the Board of Control, “ submit to such terms without raising a rumpus, or take such a beggarly dole ? Our world-famous cricketers, we would remind you, are fellows for whom you must pay; and if now so stingy and mean they should find you, how can you expect them to play? If we sent a side, you would soon be in clover, for thousands would flock to the sight; we firmly decline to despatch a team over, unless Maoriland comes to light.” So lately the Council fresh efforts have started, and now they approach New South Wales; I hope they succeed, for we'll all be down-hearted if this new attempt also fails.
