PAPANUI BURGESSES ASSOCIATION. On Wednesday, the monthly meeting of this association was held in the Library Hall, Mr S. E. M'Carthy (president), in the chair. There was a large attendance of members. and many municipal matters for the goctrl of the district were dealt with. TENNIS. Papanui A lost to Ri ccarton on Fa - panui courts. Miss Keeper was the only winner of the. ladies, but Haines and Chapman. Papanui Club’s first and second players, were successful, 6-1, 6-4. Banks, who played fourth, put up a good fight, but lost 6-4. This young player only needs to steady down' to be a frequent winner. St Paul’s A jonrned out to Paparua ana wore also unsuccessful. Miss A. Chapman was the only lady to win. ami. as was the case with the other rlnb. only the first, two men did veil, I iliman beating Spicer 6-2. and Bowbyes winning from Kcnworthv 6-5. St Paul’s 8., on the borne courts, went down by a small margin to Papania B. Mr s Baynes won 6-1. Miss French 6-4, G. AA'aiker 6-5, and D. Gray 6-4. Jn the doubles Airs Bavnes anil Miss Banks won 6-3 and Miss French and Miss D. Hassail 6-5. Oakes and M alker went down rather badlv, but Baynes and Gray won 9-4. Papanui 8.. against Riccarton 8.. were defeated by a good margin. Two of the local colts, Jordan and Haberfield, put up good fights, but the others found the opposition too strong. PERSONAL. The following ladies contributed the readings at last Monday’s meeting ~f the Literary Society:—Mesdames Humber, Caverhill, Dench, Patrick. Misses Searell. Hassall. M’Donald, Somerset. Reynolds, Caverhill. Miss I. Douglas, of Timaru, was the guest of Mrs Barnard, over the week end holiday. Mesdames C. Smith, T. Berrr, Blackmore., Lord, AY. AY. Taylor and Miss M. Millar were omitted from the list of the social committee of the Papanui Library. Miss A. Banks and W. Boyne* were successful on Labour Day in winning the Yankee tournament in connection with St Paul’s Tennis Club. Messrs E. Chapman (Papanui Cub') and H. Tillman (St Paul’s') are included in the recently-published ranking list of the first ten players of associ ated suburban tennis clubs. SPORTS CLUB PROGRAMME. At a meeting held at the AA'ainiairi Council Chambers on AVednesday, Mr R. J. Pugh in the ch air, the honorary secretary, Mr T. H. Clough read tho following approved programme for the Christmas holiday meeting. Cycling; One mile, £6 ; two-mile Papanui wheel race, £9 (fastest heat £1), and two mile Canterbury cycle championship, blue ribbon and clasp value £6 (must be done in 4.45 or less). One-mile ladies’ race for trophies (free entrv). Athletics: 120yds. 220vds. each £6. amateur 100yds. flat; lOOvds (district), 220yds, 440yds, 880yds, for trophies Post entry events include all manner of novelty events from treacled bun eating to throwing a sheaf. For the Highland dancing are good prizes in the open events: —Fling. Seann Triubhais. sword dances, and in thirteen or under are, the Fling and Sealm Triubhais. Ashby Bergh's silver cup for the most, points in the Highland events will be again competed for. LITERARY” SOCIETY. On Monday evening Mr J. Reynolds read. a most, interesting paper on the “Saturday Club at Boston.” Among the frequenters of this old-time club were such men as Emerson, AA’hittier, Th«reau ; Holmes and Longfellow. The reading was much appreciated. Mr C. Quigley acted as chairman. AA* ATM AIR I SCHOOL. At the request of the school committee, Mr G. Witty, M.P., arranged for the Minister of Education (Hon C. J. Parr) to visit the school on Thursday morning. The Minister was acecrapan ied by Messrs J. Caughley (Director of Education), AY. E. Spencer (Departmental officer in charge of buildings), A. Penlir.gt.on (Education Board orchitect) and Dr AY. Phillips (School Medical Officer). The needs of the district were put before, the Minister by Messrs T. Holmes (chairman of the school committee). T. H. Uookhnm and J. Hall. After inspecting the school, the Minister stated that the plan submirted by the board for five rooms in brick at an approximate cost of £IO.OOO was t-oo costly, but be was prepared, after the plans bad been amended in certain directions, to ask Cabinet, for the necessary grant. Messrs Witty and Holmes thanked the Minister for his

favourable and prompt reply. The Minister and his party were subsequently entertained at morning tea by the school committee. PAPANUI LIBRARY DANCE. The dance and euchre which is advertised for Tuesday night in the Town Hall in aid of the furnishings for the new library will be one of the best functions of the kind held this year. The sale of tickets has been more than expected, with the result that the committee bare appointed an extra M .C. The catering is in the hands of a large committee, in fact, everybody in Papanui seems to be helping to bring the event to a successful issue. The four prizes for the euchre are the best that have ever been offered hre. The dance will be the last of the season and the music will be supplied by NnttalPr, Band. A late tram will leave at 1.15 a.m. SACRED CONCERT. NuttalFs Band bare very generously offered their services for a sacred con cert, under the auspices of the Papanui Pogress League. The proceeds are to be allocated to the two orphanages in Papanui. and will be devoted to providing a Christmas treat. Assistance lias been promised by our local orchestra., and several vocal items have been arranged for. *• The Town Hall Committee have offered the hall at a very normal charge. In the meantime the secretary, Mr M’Connell, is to get in touch with those in charge of the orphanages for T.ne purpose of ascertaining their views on several matters. NOTES. A. valuable suggestion towards solving the park controversy is given by Mr J. Sturrock. It is that the sum of £2500 be added to the £5500 for the Langdon’s Road site to enable six acres of the Grant’s Road to be acquired, so that a loan of £BOOO for parks be voted for over the whole area of AA aimairi and Greater Christchurch on the same day. Mr AA*. T. Church has this to say : He believes the park question can only be solved by a vote. F. The Papanui branch of this society held its annual ball in the Town Hail on Tuesday evening. The decorations were most effective. Large canopy shades hung from the girders, with streamers in golden pink and deep mauve. Above the stage was drapeo the lodge banner, about which pretty boat-shaped balloons floated. The lodge officers wore their regalia, anti the whole effect vas very pretty. The ladies’ committee were. Mesdames Carrington, Moran. Heaphy, Percaski, Beagley, Tansey ; and the men’s—Messrs ,T. Henderson was the winner of the “ leads.” and Robson and Baldwin tied for winning “ skip ” with one loss each. Pennant matches start to-uay. F.AV.M.U. At a meeting of this union at the Presbyterian Sunday School last week, Airs Bickerstaff introduced Miss M'Kee, the travelling seoretsiy. who, in a very interesting address, ex, plained the work of the society. PAPANUI SOCIAL CLUB. A pleasant evening was spent at the Papanui Social Club, the occasion being the ladies’ free night to the gentlemen. The prize winners were Mr G Derrett first, and Mr Carr second Songs were sung by ATr Wooldridge, Afis«* Roberts, Miss Thompson, and Airs C. Smith. A smoke concert was hold on Saturday evening last, when prizes for the billiard tournament were presented to Air S. Kruse first, and Air E. Ford second. Musical items were given bv Messrs T. Cooper. Af’Gill. C. Sisson, J. Burl,crouch. L. Troon. A. AYooham. and E. Ford. Air G. Bailey playing the accompaniments.
