CHRONICLES OF THE WEEK

ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH. There -was again a large attendance at this week’s intercessory service for the spiritual healing mission. On Sunday a short mission is to be commenced by Mr Edmund Clark, a Church of England layman. Ho will preach at both services and hold a children's aerrioe at 2.30 p in. On the week days there is t-o be a service for children in the afternoon and for young people and adults in the evening. Mr Clark is from England and his mission is looked forward to with great interest. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Last Tuesday evening the Presbyterian Sunday School teachers entertained. the scholars at the annual social in the Town Hall. The programme consisted mainly of games, which were thoroughly enjoyed. The superintendent, Mr J. Hampton, who presided, is to be congratulated upon the success of the evening. On Sunday a Young People’s Day was celebrated, the Rev AY .T. Todd preaching in the morning and the Rev M. M’Ara in the evening. Special music was rendered and included a children's anthem in the morning serDuring the Rev IV. M’Ara’s absence the Rev W . T. Todd will take up the W9rk, preaching for the next two Sundays. INTER-BOROUGH SOCIAL. Arrangements for the inter-borough social are well in hand, and the function promises to be the outstanding featui'e of next week’s activities. Mr J. Gamblo, Mayor of New Brighton, is to be present, and the programme will make provision for the entertainment ® large number of visitors from the clubs of our seaside neighbours. A subcommittee was appointed to draw' up j suggestions for a campaign to raise f funds. Arrangements for opening j day were considered, final arangements being left until next week. The opening of the Sumner Bowling Club's season was successfully carried out in good weather, the attendance being a record. The president, Air T. C. Evans, and Afrs Evans, welcomed the guests and formally declared the season open. In doing so L lie. reviewed the successes of tho previous yeai. thanking the officers, the ladies and the green superintendent. Afrs Kvans then rolled up the first howl, and the whole of the. rinks were quickly actively seeking the companionship of “ kitty.” SCHOOL SOCTAL. The recent Sumner School social at the Town Hall proved a very successful evening. Being free, for the greater part of fancy dress encumbrances. the children more readily entered into the games and thorouglily enjoyed them. For the dancing music was supplied by the Sumner Jazz Orchestra. After supper a pleasant hour was spent by the adults, for whom a suitable programme was arranged. It was pointed out during the evening that the proceeds were for the schoo» picnic, and that, owing to the increased cost of transport, the trams alone for a trip to the suburbs would cost about £32. PERSONAL. At its meeting on Thursday evening, the Sumner Life Saving Club passed a resolution of condolence with Mr Sarelius and family in tlieir recent sad bereavement. The Rev W. M’Ara. is spending a short holiday in the North Island. Mr A. J. T. Withers, the popular first assistant of the Sumner School, has been appointed head master of the Balcairn School. RED CLIFFS REGATTA. Air F. T. Claridge presided over the recent meeting of the Redcliffs Regatta and Gala Committee, It was decided to hold the gala on December 8. LABOUR DAY. Labour Day proved an excellent introduction to the warm season, many hundreds patronising the borough. The Sumner Tennis Club held an all dav tournament, which was won by Miss J. York and Mr H. H. Brown. The bowling club opened the green for the day and was well rewarded for its efforts by a large attendance of members. LIFEBOAT BRIGADE. The annual meeting of the Lifeboat Brigade was held during the week. The annual report was read and adopted. The brigade is now at full strength. The gear is in fair order and with increased financial support small defects will be remedied. The year as regards rescues was a busy one. the “Rescue” having been out on six occasions and the baths boat on two. The resignation of Mr J. Hines, who has served, with the crews for over twenty years was received with regret. It was unanimously decided to create Mr Hines a life member. Officers were elected as follows Chairman. Mr H J. Marriner: trustees. Messrs Marriner, ,T. 8. Hines; auditor. Mr TV. G. Roberts; secretary' and treasurer. Mr C. I. Denham; captain. Mr G. Hines.
