EARLY PENINSULA DAYS.
Sir,—Tn your issue of October 11 you have an arrtic?e on Banks Peninsula in 1851. In the description of Quail Island your article states that two brothers of Mrs Hamilton Ward had disappeared end it was supposed that the natives bad made away with them. Now two versions of the occurrence were told me as a boy. One was that they went oystering on the sand hanks off Black Point. The tide cut them off. and in trying to wade ashore they were swept away and drowned. The other account was that the two brothers went to Governor’s Bay to get some manuka scrub. They overloaded their small boat, and when they were returning the boat capsized and they were drowned. I never heard of any native trouble. Could anv of vour readers give the right version ? The. Mr Dobbs mentioned as farming in Governor's Bay must. I think, have been Mr Potts. I am, etc., ORTON BRADLEY. Charteris Bay. October 25.
