Sea walls have been washed away, piers ripped apart, houses along the shores damaged, and roadways washed out, as the result of a forty-eight hour downpour, combined with a gale that touched eighty miles an hour. The schooner M’Donald foundered, but the crew were rescued. The steamer Maracaibo, as well as ten smaller vessels, came into port badly damaged, while the British steamer, Westmoreland, is reported to be missing. She has a crew of eighty.

Sydney “ Sun ” Cable. NEW YORK. October 24. Great storms have been sweeping the Atlantic, for the past fortnight, and numbers of steamers have suffered damage. The British steamer Westmoreland sent out an “5.0.5.” call On Monday night asking that help should be sent quickly as the lifeboats had been washed away. The ship has not reported since, and the worst is feared. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, October 25. The Federal Company advise that the steamer Westmoreland, reported to be sinking off South America, is not the same boat which, chartered by them, visits New Zealand from Britain periodically.
