FANCY DRESS CATCHES FIRE.
PETTY OFFICER’S DEATH. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. October 26. On Wednesday last, during a fancy dress ball, Petty Officer W. Tickell, who was coming out on tho Remuera to join the Chatham, was wearing an oakum girdle and wig as a Zulu chief. While lighting a cigarette, his girdle caught fire and in a few seconds was a mass of flames. Attempts to extinguish the flames failed until he had been so severely burned that death followed on Saturday.
