MARINE DEPARTMENT.

APPOINTMENT OF SECRETARY. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, October 23. Mr George Crosbie Godfrey has been appointed secretary to the Marine Department in succession, to Mr A. D. Park, who was recently appointe Aseistqnt Public Service Commissioner. Mr Godfrey, who is forty-three years old, entered the servioe in 1897, and in 1901 he became private secretary to the Hon William Hall-Joncs, then Minister of Public Works and Marine. H© was with him during the three years when New Zealand’s principal shipping and seamen legislation was passed. He accompanied the Minister to England twice on official visits. Mr Godfrey was subsequently appointed assistant clerk in the Public Works Department, and chief clerk in 1914. On the retirement of Mr W. S. Short, he was made Assistant Undersecretary. He is an executive member of the Main Highways Board, also a member of the Shores Control Board and tj*9 Office Accommodation Board He served in France with the Second Brigade of artillery. Mr Godfrey is regarded as one of the most efficient officers in the Public Service.
