THRILLS AT SOCKBURN.

MOTOR-CYCLE RACES. There was an attendance of about 4000 people at the Canterbury Park Racecourse yesterday to witness the Pioneer Sports Club's motor carnival, and they were provided with a good day's sport. The racing was very interesting throughout, while extra thrills were provided or. occasions through spills.'' The most serious of these occurred after the first race and before the competitors had pulled up. One of the riders. John Brown, of Christchurch, was negotiating the turn at th£ top of the straight when his machine got into a rut. and he crashed into the fence on the outside of the course. He received severe cute about, the face, and his nose was broken. Another competitor, A. Crawford, went down twice, but lie escaped unhurt. The most successful riders during the dav were P. Coleman, of Palmerston North, and S. C. Stratton, of Levin. Coleman won the New Zealand heavy-weight championship, of twelve miles, in lOmin 2?sec. His best time for a lap was 61 3-6 sec. He reduced this on the occasion of his next win. the Place Handicap. The eight miles were covered in 7min 0 l-ssec, arid the fastest lap was 50 l-ssec. Stratton annexed the lightweight- handicap, eight- miles, and the Canterbury middle-weight championship, tei miles, the time for the latter being 9min 36 2-ssec. His best lap time was 55sec. Morland being m the lead, with Woodman and Mangham next. With five laps to go. Woodman went to tile lead, but he withdrew from the contest in the next lap. Coleman then proceeded to give the spectators some thrills as be passed one after another of the competitors. He overhauled Morland starting or. the last, lap. Monkman followed Morland. Thi3 order wa-s maintained t-o the finish, and Coleman was heartily applauded as he passed the post. His best time for a lap was 50 l-ssee. CONSOLATION HANDICAP, three, miles.
