While dealing with the question of the inspection of consumers’ electric power and lighting installations in his report to the Wellington City Council, Mr M. Cable. Acting-General Manager of Tramways and Chief Electrical Engineer, remarked that although it is becoming the practice of the American City authorities to he responsible for the standard of installation work, the standards of material used, such as wire, conduit fixtures and appliances are those fixed by the Fire Underwriters, who possess extensive testing laboratories at Chicago and New York. Conduit and other material approved hv the laboratories bears a stamp to tiiat effect. During recent years the standard of installation work in America has been greatly improved and he was surprised to find that the conduit adopted there with half the Dominion standard voltage was much heavier than that in uso in this country.
