SPREYDON SPARKLES.

SPREYDON BURGESSES* ASSOCIATION. The inaugural meeting of the Spreydon Burgesses' Association was held on October 3 in the old Council Chambers, Barrington Street , Mr G. AY ear presiding over a good attendance. Several members spoke on the many advantages of having a Burgesses’ Association in tho district. Tho following officers were elected for the ensuing j year:—President, Air George AVoar; ! vice-presidents, Alessrs AT. Richards, F. ! Schwartz, F. Greig; honorary secretary and treasurer Air J. Clemens; honorary auditor, Mr Cameron. It was agreed to hold public meetings on tho second AVediiesday in each month, in the old Council Chanters, if the City Council will grant the Tree of the room. The secretary was instructed to have membership cards printed and distributed. The membership at present j is about fifty, but the executive and members intend to canvass the district to enrol new members. Alessrs AY. Win so r and F. Cooke (Christchurch City Council) and D. Sykes (Tramway Board) have promised the association their whole-hearted support. YOUNG PEOPLE’S EFFORT. j An object worthy of mention is the effort of a number of young people who have formed a club known as the . West Spreydon Tennis and Debating Club. By united effort they have managed to raise the sum of £3O, which has been handed to the medical officer in charge of tho consumptive sanatorium lor distribution to the sick and destitute with whom lie is constantly coming in contact. It is hoped in the now season, which is just begin - j ning to raise a further sum for the ! same, purpose. The secretary’s address is 4, AYychburv Street, Sprev(lon. AYEST SPREYDON BO AY LING CLUB. It is only in recent years that the j residents of tho district have awoke to j the fact that they have a fine sports j ground in the Spreydon- Domain. There aro now two football grounds, a cricket pitch, and three hard tennis courts. In order to form a Bowling Club, three prominent lesidents made a move and tho upshot of their endeavours was that a club was formed. The green and banks are sown and finished. Tho club has a fine committee who have put in a lot of work shifting soil and | planting trees hut much work is still to be done. Air J. Bracken bridge, 08, Martin’s Road, is the honorary secre- j lary. It is intended to have the green I in playing order for next season, but residents are asked to join up now. SOMERFIELD SAVIAIMING CLUB. The fourth annual meeting of the Somerfield Amateur Swimming Club was held in the Somerfield School on October 3. Owing to the president, Air AY. AYinsor, being unavoidably absent, the chair was taken by Air T. Good. The balance-sheet showed the club to be in a good financial posit-ion, and Air A. \Y. Spence, the club captain, congratulated the club on tue past season, which had been the most successful since the club had started. During the year two dances were held and were a success both socially luicl financially. The thanks of th e club are due to the Somerfield School Committee for the use of the school for the social and committee meeting*. The secretary reports that the bath was cleaned out and painted last Saturday. 'Hie official opening for this season will take place on Saturday, October 20. SPREYDON TENNIS CLUB. Tlie official opening took place last Saturday, the president. Air J. A'oss, 1 declaring the season open. Tlic open- j ing sot was played by Airs Andrews, j Airs Bloor, Alessrs Voss and Porter. In ! the evening a dance was held which j was a great- success. The music was ; supplied by Bailey’s Banjo Band. \ I)DINGTON SCHOOL. j Last week the Addington School j Committee organised a bottle campaign j which resulted in £lO 10s being netted. The proceeds are. to he devoted to the holding of a fair in the school \ grounds on Saturday, October 27. fo j tho purpose of collecting sufficient money to give the children a free Picnic. SPREYDON SPORTS ASSOCIATION. • A meeting will be held next Tuesday to consider the ways ami means ol j raising money to build a pavilum on { the Spreydon Reserve. THE ASSOCIATION GAME. Congratulations to the Sunnyside A.F.C. for winning tllo Canterbury Football Association championship trophy, the 'Huxley Shield. SELAYYX HOCKEY CLUB. Tho members of the Selwyn Hockey * Club were the guests of Air AYalter Johnson at a social evening in the Dickens Street Hall on October 3. Progressive euchre vas played, resulting in Air F. Nicholls first. Air AY. Bell son., second. In thanking tho host. Mr Bell referred to the able assistance given to hockey by Air Johnson. During the evening the five aside, medals wore presented to tho winning senior team—-W. Richmond (captain), AT. Hill. T. Al’Cafferv. A. Alahonev and AY. I lore. PERSONA 1,. Airs Samuels, of Tainui Street, returned home after spending a holiday with her sister, Air* A'ineent, Featherston. North Island. Mr and Airs T. Good, Somerfield Street, are returning from New Brighton after several weeks spent at the seaside. It is to bo hoped that the. change will have restored Airs Good to ■ her normal health.
