ARE THE SEASONS GETTING LATER?

There are those who will associate to-day’s moist weather with the unlucky date selected by so many sports bodies for their opening day, hut a little reflection will show that the spring months, although not notable for a particularly heavy rainfall, are undeniably .moist, with protracted spells of rain from the east. The blanket of scud from the sea may be unwelcome to the sports lover, but it has a wholesome effect on grass and vegetation generally, and however irritating it may be to see cricket and lawn tennis and boating put off from one week to another, and the surfing season delayed, it can never he said that Christchurch is ill-favoured in the matter of weather, especially when the brilliant winter and autumn sunshine is taken into account.

Old residents aver that the seasons in Canterbury are changing and it is not wise to dismiss the question lightly. In the early days of the province the crops were harvested in December, but January and February are the usual harvest months nowadays, and the warm settled weather comes principally in February and March. It is a distinct consolation to know that if Nature has taken off at one end of the season she has put on at the other, and those who may have sadly put their flannels away to-day may be sure that the turf will he all the greener when the skies arc bluer.
