Dr and Mrs Hassell have gone hack to Timaru, after a brief star in town. Guests at the United Service include Mr and Mrs Eoeve, of Auckland. •yVlr and Mrs Philip Nathan will return to Wellington to-night. Mr and Mrs R. Cuddie, of Dunedin, are returning south to-day. Mrs Din do Ferguson and Mrs Batchelor are returning to Dunedin to-day. Air and Mrs Preshaw, of Straits Settlements, arrived from Wellington this morning. Miss Hawthorne-Ross. of Dunedin, is leaving for Wellington this evening. Mr J. Linklater. M.P.. Palmerston North, and Mrs Tiink later, arrived from the south last evening. Air and Mrs C. AT. Meredith, of Auckland, are staying at the United Service. Mrs A. E. Birdling. and her son, Mr H. A. Birdling, of Birdling's Flat, arc staying at the Clarendon. Airs and Aliss JTunter-Weston, who earn© up for the Christ’s College Sports, have returned to Timaru. Air. and Airs Walter Baxter, of Timaru, will arrive in town to-morrow from a visit to the Islands and Australia. Mrs R. B. Caws and Afrs H. Al’Alister, of Dunedin, arrived from the north this morning and are staying at Warner’s. Air and Airs H. W. Brownie and Son (Ashburton) are leaving by the Moeraki next week for Melbourne, their future home. Miss Cox and Miss Myers have been exveptionally busy of late, preparing their pupils for a dance exhibition, to bo given in the Caledonian Hall, Kilrnore Street, on Saturday. October 27. Proceeds will go to Nurse Alaude’s funds. .V very enjoyable evening was spent on Tuesday at the residence of Air and Airs W. Hall. St Asaph Street, the occasion being a kitchen evening to Aliss Ida Murray, of Ballantvnes Tea Room staff, whose marriage takes place shortly. Games. competitions, singing and dacing were indulged in. The St Paul’s Church annual tea meeting was held on Wednesday evening. In the interval between the tea meeting and the concert, Air Raynor White gave an organ recital in the church. The concert, which was held in the hall, Lichfield Street, drew a very large attendance, all the seating

accommodation being taken up. Alesdames Calvert and Gallop, Messrs Hugh Hobbs, S. Gallop. T. White, Bills and Brunell contributed songs. Aliss Kathleen Read, who was so successful at the 'Wellington competitions,

gavo several sketches and numerous encores, Aliss Wilson gave a violin solo. The Pa pa mi i orchestra contributed several selections. The Church

choir rendered “Hail Smiling Alorn Aliss Daphne Henry recited, and Aliss Doull gave a short address on the work of the missionaries amongst the Maoris at Ruatahuna. During the interval Air Geo. Burn, feession clerk, presented the Rev J. Paterson (in view

of his approaching marriage). with a cheque from the members of the congregation as a token of esteem and

affection and wished him evert happiness in his married life. Air Paterson thanked the donors lor their good

wishes. On Thursday evening the Christchurch Dairymen’s Association held their first annual ball in the Caledonian Hall which was tastefully decorated with red. blue and ecru streamers, while balloons and baskets with festoons of red roses were suspended along the centre of the hall. The stage was a bower of greenery and palms. During the dance coloured limelight and spot-lights were displayed effectively, a “lucky spot” dance cansing considerable interest. Air Leo Coffey and Miss Eileen Power gave an exhibition of the latest fox-trot and one-step. The executive committee worked hard to make the function a success, and were ably assisted by a ladies’ committee. The M.C.’s were Alessrs Cook and Todhunter.
