TRAFFIC IN WOMEN.
TRAPPED LETTER dIVES SHOCKING DETAILS. “ MAY CRY AS MUCH AS THEY LIKE AT SAN FRANCISCO.” By TelegrapU.—Press Assn.—^opyright. —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. (Received October 13, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, October 12. Delegates from seventeen countries attended the Conference of the International Bureau for the Suppression of the Traffic in Women and Children. The conference was held at Caxton Hall, Bishop Ryle presiding. Shocking evidence of the white slave traffic was presented. For example, two traffickers were caught in Germany last week, one of whom confessed that he had brought fifty girls to Holland during the year. A letter from one trafficker led to the arrest of the other. “ Five lassies have arrived,” the letter said, “ and have been sent to New York. Hamburg was full of police, but after hard work, we brought the girls to the steamer. “ Two girls nearly betrayed us by crying, but you kno\v the effect of chloroform. At San Francisco, they may cry for their father and mother as much as they like. “ If you have further merchandise, bring it immediately, a cheque for 1000 dollars follows. “ If the girls are not willing, take them to the place I told you of. There they will become reasonable. Destroy this letter immediately.”
