SYSTEM OPERATES TO DAY. I i The new telephone charges came into operation to-dav. Under this system j the different exchanges are classified I according to the number of subscribers. | For each exchange or network there I is defined an area known as the base I rate area, within which telephone ger- ; vice will he furnished on a flat, rate j basis. Exchanges or networks will | bo classified in one or other of the following classes : j Class I.—Exchanges or networks obJ serving continuous attendance and having more than 3500 paying subscribers j and stations connected therewith, j Class 2. -Exchanges or networks ob- ! serving continuous attendance and | having 1001 to 3500 paying subscribers ; and stations connected therewith. Class 3. —Exchanges or networks observing continuous attendance and ! having 201 to 1000 paying subscribers j and stations connected therewith. I Class 4.—Exchanges or networks j where the attendance is restricted, j The base rate area in respect of any j of the exchanges in Classes 1 and 2 j shall not exceed twenty-eight square miles and twenty square miles respectively. At classes 3 and 4 exchanges ! the base rate area shall not exceed ; thirteen square miles and the boundary j shall in each case, unless otherwise deI fined, lie two miles distant by pole line i route measurement from, the telephone 1 exchange. j The following is the new scale
