CRICKET.

The competitions under the auspices of the -Canterbury Cricket Association are to start on October 13. Most of the clubs will open the season next Saturday. However. the players of some of the clubs took the opportunity to get in net. practice last Saturday afternoon. Linwood, "ho won the senior championship iast reason, had a good muster of senior layers at Lancaster Park. They arc keen to vriu again this season. East Christchurch also were practising at Lancaster Park. The players practised on the side grounds sis the Oval is not yet in a fit state. It was badly cut up towards the end of the football season. Woodend batted first and made 140 (D. N lion 42, H. Little 43, A. Jtidson 25 not out). Amberley have lost two wickets for 38 runs. Mayo and W. A. Macfarlane bowled best for Amberley. In the Western side, Horrelville defeated Swannanoa by eight wickets and 60 runs. Scores: Horrelville, 125 for two wickets (Wright 60 not out, Beere 47 not out); Swannanoa. 65 (H. Winter 22. J. SUMNER CLUB. • Sumner Cricket Club were fortunate in having perfect weather to open their pcason at St Leonard's Square on Saturday. The president. Mr F. A. Tapson, in declaring the season open, referred to the bright, prospects oT tbe club, and wished it every success. During the afternoon a match was played—Mr Tapson's side versus Mr Hampton's side—some excellent cricket resulting, and the former side winning by two runs. Afternoon tea was dispensed, during the course of which the Mayor. Mr W. H. Nicholson, congratulated the club on its progress in the paat, and extended liis good wishcß to the club for the future.
