PAPANUI PARAGRAPHS

NEWS OF THE DISTRICT

By our Special Correspondent

COMBINING SPORT. The suggestions of Mr Clough and Mr S. Kruse that the. various sports and games could lie linked up by a committee formed of the executives of each, has many opponents, who point out that there is no community of interests in sport. In Wednesday’s newspapers, however, was a report of the Belfast Sports dub, which proved what could be done. This body, composed of delegates from cricket, football, tennis, and howling, has assets amounting to over £7OO. It has financed the tennis section for their courts, and will lay down a croquet lawn providing a croquet section is formed. Each of the different sections control its own incomes, but the Belfast Sports Club links them togethei. arid the executive of each section becomes acquainted with the needs and also the progress of the others On a smaller scale the two Papanui tennis clubs have come together lately. The clubs ran a combined handicap tournament and recently carried out a tennis dance with a joint committee. PERSONAL. Messrs J. Chat-field and J. H. Reynolds have agreed to sit on the Town Hall Management Committee, as representatives of the Papanui Library. Last Saturday afternoon the president of the St Paul's Tennis Club, the Rev W. H. Orbcll, served the first ball and declared the new season open. Afterwards members and their friends were the gcusts of Mrs Orhcll at afternoon tea. The delegates from the Papanui Sports Club to the North Canterbury Centre are Messrs T. H. Clough and IL. Rickerby. A hearty vote of thanks was passed io Mrs .T. Reynolds at the last meeting of the Literary Society for her kindness in providing the society with a room for the meeting. Miss B. E. Baughan is to give the next address to the Literary Society. Mr M 'Connell has promised to act as secretary of the- committee set up to raise funds for the library. A very pretty wedding was celebrated at St Paul’s Church on Thursday. when May, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Burborough, was married to Mr John Magee. The Rev W. H. Orbel! officiated. The bride looked charming in white crepe do chine, worn with a wedding veil, and carried a pretty bouquet. The bridesmaids were Miss Doris Burborough, coral pink creep de chine, with black hat trimmed to match the dress, the other Miss Drummond, also wore a black hat trimmed to match 1-/T apple green crepe de chine dress. Mrs Burborough wore brown gabardine, and the bride’s aunt, Mrs Drummond, wore fawn gabardine. The wedding breakfast was served at the C-adena.

All will regret that Airs Harold M’Donald, who has so kindly assisted in so many Papanui functions, is leaving iJjc district to reside in the city. Air T. H. Clough save that the credit lor last Tuesday evening was due to ATr Bert Derrett and the enthusiastic committees appointed. He also wishes to thank Air Hutchinson lor the use of his electric light effects. LITERARY SOCIETY.

At the last meeting of this society there was a good attendance of members. Miss Search gave a delightful recital of Tennyson’s poetry, and at the conclusion, a vote of thanks proposed by Afr AY. T. AValker was carried bj- acclamation. THE LIBRARY.

Everything points to the library committee getting possession of the new rooms in the Town Hall very shortly. A committee lias been set up to hold a euchre and dance to raise funds for the new shelving, and this is sure of support from all Papanui. A good library would be a great asset to the district, and once the Tramway Board reduces the single section fare to a penny it would be possible to have a great number of subscribers from St Albans, and also from Nortlicoto district. There is an argument why the first section from the Square should be twopence, but none wliy the third or fourth section should be. The trams are usually only halffull by the time Leinster Road is left liehind. and use at the Papanui end should be encouraged.

TO THE LADIES. Tn Air T. H. Clough. Papanui has a man with ideas, and the one of •jiving a. free night to the lady workers for the Sports and Football Clubs was appreciated. The decorations, catering, waiting, etc., were all done by the inCn. and it must be admitted filings were admirably managed. and Mr Clough is to be congratulated both on his scheme of decoration and the organisation. Four baskets hung from the* girders. Interlaced to the centre mass of foliage of yucca and fontenscia were the coloured streamers of the four carnival queens, and the whole intermingled with the black and white of the Papanui-Ha re wood Sports Club and the* AYairaairi Football Club. The stage was a mass of foliage brightened with camelias. and gay with coloured lights. The tables were bright with bands of rod and white circling round vases of fontenscia and red and white camelias. Two hundred and ten invitations wore sent out, and over five hundred people were present. The evening was a great success. ATr Frank Sisson gave an address of welcome to the ladies, which was replied to by Air AA . Boyce. The various committees were:—Decorations, Messrs R. Rickerby, R. J. Pugh, Frank Sisson. A. Pearce. Our first fire since being under the control of the City Fire Brigade occurred at the Methodist Orphanage on Tuesday evening. The fire was confined to an outhouse. ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY. The hostess received her guests wearing a graceful frock of black brocaded satin with an overdress of sequins. Mr R Hawke, the first president of the society, was unavoidably absent.
