IMPROVING STANDARDS.
IMPORTED SOUTHDOWN RAMS. The Zealandir. which arrived at Auckland on Wednesday, brought twenty prize Southdown shearling rams and ten Southdown ram lambs consigned to Messrs Slack Bros of Otaki. The sheep were selected in the United Kingdom bv Mr B. H. Slack, of Otaki. and his brother. Mr J U. G. Slack, of Christchurch, the well known cattle and sheep judge. The rams were selected with a view to improving the Southdown breed in New Zealand.Messrs Slack Bros purchased rams from the following well known flocks amongst others' His Majesty the King’s (Sandringham), the Duke of Richmond’s (Goodwood). Lord Derby’s and Sir J. Colman’s (Gatton Park'. Sir William Bird’s (Park Farm, Eartham), the Rev Mr (Cambridge), Lady* Ludlow's (Luton Hoe) and Lady Fitzgerald's. Some of the rams were prize winners at all the principal shows in the United Kingdom this year, including the Royal Show, which was held at Newcastle-on-Tyne.
