LITTERED WITH DEAD SHEEP.
LOSSES IN THE HURUNUI. (Special to the “Star.”) CHEVIOT, May 8. A south-easterly rain still continues, but shows signs of breaking. For the last twenty-four hours 2.80 in of raiu have fallen. The damage to roads and bridges is very serious. The Waiau bridge has sunk about six feet for four spans, and is impassable to traffic. Big losses have occurred among sheep ori the river flats. Gore Bay n littered with dead sheep from the sea. which were washed don n by the rivers Portions of the lower Hurunui bridge are also on the beach. Farms along the Hurunui River have suffered severely. Fences and sheep have been carried away, and the land w-shed away ior silted over. The rivers have gone down several feet, but they are still very high. The Hurunui traffic bridge is still standing, hut is badly shaken.
