Mr Stanley Baldwin announced in the House of Commons that Sir Percy Cox, High Commissioner in Mesopotamia, had published a protocol in Baghdad, to the effect that the presentBritish Iraq Treaty would be terminated on Iraq’s admission to the League of Nations, or within four yetfrs of the conclusion of peace with Turkey, whichever was the earlier. Mesopotamia, which is now known as Iraq, was conquered by Indian and British troops during the Great War. The town of Bosra was occupied on November 22, 1914, and Baghdad on March 11. 1917. Tn the Treaty of Peace with Turkey. Ir-aq was recognised as an independent State, to be placed under a mandatory Power. The mandate was allotted to Great Britain. The Treaty of Peace with Turkey was signed at Sevres on August 10. 1920.
