COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL.

OPENS ON MONDAY NEXT

The annual festival of the Christchurch Competitions Society will commence on Monday, May 7. The day sessions will be conducted in the Theatre Royal and Choral Hall and the evening sessions in the Theatre Royal. A start will he made on Monday at the Choral Hall at 10 a.m.. when the ladies’ recitation, “ The Blackbird ” will be heard, to be followed by the recitation for girls of sixteen and under eighteen, “ Butterflies.” In the afternoon session at- the same place the recitation from a. New Zealand author, by lady or gentleman, will be heard at two o’clock, and the reading at sight class will follow. On the musical side a capital programme will be offere 1 at the Theatre Royal on Monday afternoon. The under eighteen piano solo, “ Polonaise ” (Breitkopt). soprano solo own selection, men’s vocal solo by •a. .New Zealand: jeomposer, and the twelve and under sixteen violin solo promise to produce some attractive performers. At the evening concert in the Theatre Royal the recalled competitors will appear, and in a brief formal ceremony the Festival will be declared officially open. Additional items will be a TVelsh - song for boy or girl under eighteen, and the first competitors in the “ Story Without Words ” class will appear. Tt is expected that the judges, Messrs Asprey and Leicester, will arrive in Christchurch on Friday next. The festival will be continued daily until May 26.
