There is evidence that “Captain Smith.” who was mentioned in the cable messages regarding William Warren, the international “crook” operated in Christchurch and other parts of New Zealand in 1909 and 1910. Smith, who also went under the aliases of La Iron and Howell, worked a number of betting frauds against bookmakers and others. He was an expert card sharper, ami victimised many innocent persons with the hoary tc three card trick.” A trick worked on a leading Maori at Kaiapoi led to his downfall, and he was arrested and sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. On his release he went to Australia.
