DISPOSAL OF TRANSFERS
TWO ILLUSTRATIONS. The electors did not stick altogether to I party in the bestowal of their votes. | though the party leanings are imli- j cnted very substantially in the way in ' which the scrutineers were called upon j to transfer the preferences. In those j cases where Mr Armstrong, for in- i stance, received the first preferences, ! no fewer than 026 second preferences ; were given to other than Labour Party ; candidates. An illustration of the; general trend of the electors to ad- j here to party loaning ks demonstrated in the following table. The first count, figures and the total are official, the others being gleaned from unofficial sources. Two cases, that of a ' Citizens’ Association candidate and i that of a Labour Party candidate are i quoted, and the figures show how many of their second preferences the other candidates received. The position given is that which existed at the conclusion of the e.’ghty-fourth count. A notable feature is the slow manner in which the independent candidates have made ground. The preference transfers quoted are only two of the many that have been made, and the figures, therefore, do rot account for the totals now standing against the names of the candidates. In the oases of those candidates elected on the first preferences, the figures in parentheses indicate the amount of surplus available for distribution among other canI
didates. The table is as follows:— 1 ‘ 1 , ?, i.... fl ii ft Agar . nl| ill c! — _ 1030 M’Kellar ’ 64t X fif) X 3 743 Lead ley * ?!t 1C 681 sdL Charters Cray . . 50-.
