THE ORIENT LINE. An outline of the financial history of the Orient Steam Navigation Company. Limited. was furnished by Sir Alan Anderson in giving evidence before the Imperial Shipping Committee to rebut evidence that the company had made very large profits out of the Australian trade. He said the company was formed in 1878 with a capital of £466,000. In 1900 it was reconstructed. £140,000 was written off. and the shares were divided into a little over £IOO,OOO deferred. and the rest preferred. Up to 1910. allowing for writing off the capital, there was a return of 1.49 per cent per annum, and yet during that time, except for six years, a rebate system was in force. In 1907 a new fleet was built, which was in the water in 1910, and cost nearly £2,000,000, which was borrowed, so that the Company waß trading, not only on its nominal capital of £820.000, but also on the £2.000,000 whfch was borrowed, with the result that a 50 per cent return on the ordinary capital of £IOO,OOO in reality only amounted to 24 per cent yield on £2,000.000. Sir Alan Anderson also mentioned that the Orient Company derived 13 per cent of its income from freight under the rebate system, and that the influence of the system on the company's business, therefore, was not s.-» large as it might seem to bo.
