VOYAGES FROM THE OLD I COUNTRY. 1 TALES OF THE EMIGRANT SHIPS. Th* romance and some of tbe hardships of the early shipping days of New Zealand are recalled in the series of articles now being published by the “ Star ” relating to the early shipping days. Many people are interested in the subject, as there are still many old identities with us, while thousands of citizens of the Dominion are descended from the old stock, whic n braved the voyages in the sailers of the ’fifties, 'sixties and ’seventies. Bailey, arrived in Ala roe harbour on a whaling voyage from South Dartmouth. Massachusetts, t:> which port she belongs and from whenoe she sailed on October 9, 1855litis vessel called at Pernambuco and left again on December 12. Reports a ship about W. S.W. of Akaroa .Heads twenty miles, on the morning of the 21st, apparently a whaler. ARRIVAL OF THE WESTMINSTER. (f rom the “ Lyttelton Times,” April 23, 1856.) The Westminster arrived at Wellington from England on Wednesday last, after a passage of ninety-two days from Plymouth. This vessel has brought out one hundred and three passengers, about thirty of whom are for Canterbury. and a large pro|X»rtion of cargo. A NEW COASTING SCHOONER. The Gipsy, which arrived here from Wellington on Sunday morning last, j fills up the gap created in our coasting I and river craft by the loss of the Catherine A»ui. Jfhe sailing powers of this little schooner is well known, and we trust that she will prove a valuable accession to our “channel fleet '’ and be a source of profit to the owner. A FATAL ACCIDENT. On Wednesday last, 16th inst, as three natives who live at J? islieiman’s Kay on the Peninsula, were out fishing off l'leL Lay iu the schooner i»oat Emma, better known as the little Rory O’Moore, the boat foundered. when the three men were unfortunately drowned. The day was beautifully cairn and the accident was witnessed from the Heads by two native women. WRECK OF QUEEN OF THE ISLES. (From the “ Lyttelton Times,” June 7, 1856.) The Westminster, after a passage of six days from Wellington, anchored off me heads ol : tore Uooper yesterday afternoon. Only one boat had reached Lyttelton before we went to press, and this brougut no papers. We hear that tne Queen of trie l.vies was blown on a reef near the harbour of Lyttelton. All on board were saved, but the vessel was totally wrecked and the whole of her cargo lost. SEEKING SHEET EE. We bear that the Gratitude, Captain Rogers, hence the 12th lilt for Otago jiud the Bluff', with passengers, put into Akaroa on Saturday night last. The captain reported having been driven by southerly weather as far north as (ape Palliser and that he had not been able to get further south than Timaru. When off this part of the coast southerly weather again set in and compelled him to run into Akaroa. Fresh provisions having been taken on board, the captain intended to sail for Otago on Wednesday last. Passengers and men were all well. WESTMINSTER ARR IVES.
