The. Minister of Lands has written to th© Mayor (Dr H. T. Thacker) stating that he regrets he cannot see his way to direct that steps will be taken at the present time to acquire Onawe Island. He has been advised that the cost of acquiring the freehold of the island would probably involve a considerable expenditure apart from the expenditure involved in planting it with native bush, so that it could be made a sanctuary for native birds.
