HOPES FOR OAMARU.

RIDICULE ON MR MASSEY. (Special to the “Star.”) OAMARU, April 28. Mr J. A. Macpnej&on s rueecang last night i*s doßcnoe-a by oi<l resiuenis as tiiu biggest non-lVlinisterial meeting ever lima m Oa-maru. Axr Massey hau had a slightly larger meeting, but the only dirrerexj.ee was thut the police allowed people to stand in the aisles at -'lr Massey s meeting and refused to allow it last night. Hundreds of people were turned away, even though it was late shopping night in Oamaru, which prevented many from attending. Mr Aiacpherson received, a magmacent reception, his speech being punctuated by outbursts of enthusiastic applause. There were no hostile interjections, and a motion of thanks and confidence was carried by an overwhelming majority. Mr Macpheraon is an eloquent speaker and never misses an opportunity of heaping ridicule on the Prime Minister, who is carrying his “ seoond strongest Minister ” in his pocket. It is apparent that Mr Massey is smarting under the continual ridicule and is feeling that he is making a fool of hinjself in the eyes of the Dominion. His visits to the schools, accompanied by Mr Lee, are the joke of the district. Prospects for Mr Macpherson on Tuesday are excellent. He is sure of an increased majority in Oamaru, where in December he polled 2109 votes .against 1920 for Mr Lee.
