An incident, which was not withoat itb humorous side, was related bv an official of a bank when in conversation with a “ Manawatu Standard ” reporter. At the outbreak of the Great War he was stationed in a town in Australia which was the centre of a strong German colony. "With the commencement ot hostilities the subjects of Emperor Wilhelm made all haste to con-A-ert their available assets and bank de posits into gold currency. The issue of gold was, however, quickly stopped, and in desperation the depositors lia i to accept notes. About a. year late r one of the canny gentlemen returned » the bank and demanded to know the numbers of the notes which had been issued him. but this was impossible. His reason for such a request was found to he that he had carefully hidden his hoard in a “ safety vault in his barn: and mice had converted the valuable paper into worthless shreds.
