WOOL TRADE.

FIFTH CHRISTCHURCH SALE. MERINO EASIER, OTHER WOOLS BETTER. The fifth Christchurch wool sale of th* 1922-23 season was held at the Y.M.C'.A. concert hail to-day, when a small catalogue of 3560 bales was offered. The catalogue and order of sale was as follows : Bales N.Z. Farmers’ Co-op . . - 1272 Dalgety and Co . - 666 Pyne. Gould, Guiness . . . 820 National Mortgage . . . 358 Matson and Co .... 340 N.Z. Loan Company ... 36 Total . . . ‘ . - 3560 There was a good attendance of buyers,. English, American, Continental and local houses being represented. A tew lines of back station merino were offered but generally the catalogue was comprised of odd lots, and. being an end of the season sale, the wool was not in such good condition as that offered at the earlier sales. There was little competition from local mills, the bidding being confined mostly to Bradford and Continental buyers. As a result of the lack of competition from local mills merino wool showed a decline of about Id a lb on the prices ruling at the last Christchurch sale on March 1. For other classes, however, there was good competition in the first half of the sale and prices improved, half-bred being from Id to lid a lb better while other sorts of wool were a full Id better. Over the first portion of the sale not many passings were made. The following were top prices for fleece wools:—24d for thirty-three bales of Tamdale Merino, 23d for seven bales of Double Hill Oorriedale, 23d for three bales of Grasmere halfbred. and 174 d for three bales of Grasmere three-quarter-bred.
