CROSSING FATALITIES.
CITY COUNCIL TAKES ACTION. Ou the suggestion of the Mayor (Dr H. T. J. 'Hiacker) the City Council decided last night to forward a letter to the Minister of Railways, directing his attention to the number of accidents that have recently occurred at railway crossings in Christchurch and suggesting that some means should bo devised by which such accidents might be prevented. The Mayor, in referring to the matter, expressed the opinion that it was the duty of a large local body like the City Council to make application to the Minister of Railways to see F -f something practicable could not be done. He believed that in England the authorities provided bells at crossings which were gonged as the trains approached and kept ringing until the trains passed over the. crossings. That seemed to him to be the easiest wav out of the difficulty. Another suggestion he would like- to make was that a large placard should he erected at each crossing, giving the times when the trains passed over the crossing. H© had brought the matter up because he wanted to obtain an expression of opinion from the council. Councillor C. TV. Hervev moved a motion on the lines suggested by the Mayor. The motion was seconded bv Councillor F. R. Cooke and carried.
