With the Canterbury Jockey Club’s fixture coming on a week later, the Hororata meeting is exceptionally well placed, as it will provide an excellent opportunity for owners to gain a line on the form of their representatives. This has been, recognised by owners as shown by the nominations, which include a large number of candidates for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps. A special featcire of the list is the nomination of the New Zealand Cup candidate Scion and his stable mate Quest. These two North Island- : ers will be welcome competitors. Al- | together, the meeting looks like being • far above the average.

Shrill has been to New South Wales, on a visit to the imported horse Sarcheclon. by The Tetrarolv- Perfect Peach. GORE RACES. FIRST DAY. (Per Press Association.) 1N V ERG ARG ILL, March 9. Owing to the fact that the Gore Racing Club's’ autumn meetings opened on an off day, the attendance was only fair, but it is hoped that the meeting" will hold its own in view of the half holiday facilities available on the second day. This anticipation is justified, as the machine figures showed a flight increase of £50(5. The weather was very warm in the early part of the day. but became cold and a breeze sprang up later. The ti ark was in first-class order, consequently the times were fast in quite a number of races. On form. Osier man looked good for the Novice Riders’ Handicap. The public supported him accordingly, but these was always money for the Wingatui representative, Bonnie Olive. Naomi. Winsome Lady and Soldier Boy

were very slow to start. Moulin Rouge made the running and led into the straight- from Osterman. with Bonnie Olive handy. Ridden out. Osterman drew away to win by a length and a half from Bonnie Olivo. Royal Admiral wa.s half a length away, coming from a. long way back and beating Moulin Rouge by a neck. The winner is a. useful half brother to Golden King. He was injured when Raconteur crashed into him at the post at M ynrlham o’- New Year's Day, but appears to have made a good recovery. Bonnie Olijre (Adjudge Bonnie Ouida) is a useful five-year-old mare, raced by Mrs Ellis. When beaten. Moulin Rouge came on again courageously. Roval Admiral ran a good race, considering the ground he had to make up. A large field of twenty-live contested the Progressive 'Trot (class 3.45). The public made no mistake, as the first selection. Oboe M. Wilkes, by Nelson Bingen Cremona Wilkes (Robertson) won easily from Bricklayer (.M ’Murray) and Miss O’Neill. The winner is owned b\ Mrs Morrison, who has bred several good winners from the same dam. The winner was trained at Oamaru hv J. Henderson, who later on took the second trot of the day with another of His string, the younger sister of Alhert Cling. The second gelding. Bricklayer, is a useful gelding by Coldstream Bells from a Bellman mare, trained by the Gore mentor, M’.Murray, who has an unhappy knack of finishing as runnerup in a number of races. Bonnie Boy and Wee Spark were next to the placed horses. The times were: Smin 38 2-5 sec, 3min 42sec, and 3min 55 2-ssec. An inquiry was held regarding the alleged crossing of Haerera near the home turn by the winner, but the explanation of the driver of the winner (Robertson) was accepted. He was cautioner! to be more careful in the future when driving a. known borer. Wagering was slack in the Autumn Handicap, owing to the money being held up on the previous race. 'Tlie public also looked upon the event as a good thing for the somewhat uncertain Corn Rigs, who was a warm first selection. .Tumping out smartly. Corn Rigs led throughout, being followed by Warhaven and Angelo to the straight.. The leader won easing up. Elens came fast and beat Angelo by three-quarters of a. length for second place. Wnrha.ven fourth. Silver Peak lost half a . dozen lengths at the start, by twisting round on the rise of the barrier. The winner carried only Tst 11b with Apprentice Powell in the saddle, while Eleus (H. Anderton) carried Tst 3|lb. Angelo, who was carrying the colours of his new owner, .1. Trengrove, of Dunedin, for the first time, ran a fair race. Warhaven must have disappointed his connections, but track frequenters did r.ot expect him to do any better on his recent working try-outs. Silver Peak ran well when the race was nearly Mr Robertson’s smart filly Rose" Lady followed up her Tapanni success by winning the Hokonui Hack Handicap H.ll the way. although Bloom had her doing her best in the run home. The winner is a daughter of Rose Noble

and Red Charm and was bred and trained by her owner, who- has turned out some good horses from his modest breeding area at Tapanui. Bloom (Vice Admiral—Rose Bloom), who was the favourite, ran well, while Solvency (Kilbroney—Ena; displayed some pro mise. The race was run at a fast clip and this accounted for the defeat of Border Knight. Frenchman was badly cut out shortly after the start, greatly to the chagrin of his connections. Palencia was mode a strong order for tlie Suburban Steeplechase, but the \V inton brigade rallied with support for Cazna, who was reported to have mended the error of his ways from an erratic brute to a sober-minded steeplechaser. The favourite made most of the running from Cazna and Aehilleus Half a mile from home the last-named fell, leaving Cazna. who had taken charge., to draw away and beat Palencia I v ten lengths, with Rockhampton fifteen length-? off third. Then came Glentborpe, Innisfallen and Prize Rose. At the logs in the first circuit Starloch fell. Master Hamilton refused at the sod wall the lost time, but had m. chance of getting near the leaders at t he time. Gazna- is an aged son of Stronghold and on Tronworker mare. He is trained by A. Garrard at Minton, for an enthusiastic follower of the follower of the game. Mr A. Morton, who used to race the good hurdler. Tine Blue. The winner was ridden by ’’’. O’Connell, the most successful cross country horseman in the south. The time. 4min 32sec, was very fast, even allowing for the fact that two fences were down for the last circuit, inclining one to believe that the distance was somewhat restricted and not a full two miles and a quarter. Paieiicia. who is owned by Mr L. C. Hazlett, of Dunedin, fan a good race. Dunedin visitors sent Adjutor out a pronounced favourite for the President’s Hack Handicap, but ho. had to strike hi* colours to Vice Royal, why just iasted long enough to win by a it ngth. with the outsider. Coastguard, half ii length off third. Then came Kigel close up, with Osterman next. Adjutor ran well, but the winner was too good on the day. He wa.s always in the picture, although he lost ground at the home turn. Otago patrons and friends made Lady Embrace a warm first selection for the Telegraph Trot, while the Dunedinowned pair, Forbury and Better Days respectively, had strong followings. Landlady and Better Day* showed the way for six furlongs and then Lady Embrace appeared on the scene and won by ten lengths. Landlady (Walsh) beat Better Days (R. C. Reed) by a head for second. Wee Daphne was fourth. The times were : 2min 22sec. Smin 24see and 2min 24 2-osec-. About three furlongs from home "Wallace Mac fell and brought down Kelvin Wilkes. Welcome Knight and Moonglow. Lady Blissful by a neck, with Listening \ Post half a length off third, just in I front of Marching Order. The winner, who was well ndden by C". Emerson, returned a double figure price.
