A gin was very naughty one day recently, and her mother said, 11 .you- persist in being naughty yon will never go to Heaven.'’ The little maid thought this over for a while, and then she said, “ 1 don’t suppose it really matters much. I expects its really better in Papanui.” FOOTBALL. One of the most enthusiastic meetings nei<i iii the uistricc jur time was that oi tlie \v aimairi .League X' oucbyii Cluo’s annual meeting at die cluo rooms last week, air fa. nruso p resided. me retiring secretary, Mr L. ANGLICAN. G oot he's cry : “ More light, mo relight,” still echoes Gown the years. St Pauls’s Church has now installed electricity. The Mothers’ Union met last Wednesdav and listened to a very fine address by Mrs Roberts, Canterbury president of the Union. The annual meeting will be held next month on account of the three succeeding months being devoted to lectures bv Mrs Watkins on, home nursing. These talks should be’ very interesting and instructive.

BOWLS. In the champion of champion matches, Bell’s doubles and Samuel s rink were both defeated. H. M’Donald and Co ole are now the holders of the club’s Matson Badges. CATTLE DROVING. Far too many mobs of cattle pass the Waimairi School. It should be compulsory for drovers to bring the North Canterbury mobs down Waimak and Greers Roads, and to keep well clear of the residential areas. PROGRESS LEAGUE, i This league met on Monday night, ! and, after the opening routine work, j went into committee. It was decided j afterwards to leave the question of the Town Hall finance and the sport ground till the next meeting. Mr AY. J. Boyce was in the chair. Neither the

secretary nor the assistant secretary was jfble to be present, and Mr S. H. Cox took on those duties. PROPOSED SPORTS GROUND. The. meeting on Wednesday night was well reported in all Thursday’s papers, but three speakers, Messrs W. J. Boyce, F. Bell and S. H. Cox, were not reported. These three, representing as they did the south end. were very important to tlie success of the movement. I A point that must be emphasised is this:—The meeting was called by the Waimairi council to consider the question of increasing tlie present domain by buying Mr Niclioll’s property. It would perhaps have been better if ths meeting had been called to discuss the various sites. THE TOWN HALL. On Tuesday night the committee met again, and the secretary was instructed to draw up a statement for the Press, j This was not available on Thursday ! evening, but it is understood that a ! small committee was set up to arrange for the unveiling of the memorial tablet, and another committee to deal with providing stage furnishings. A further committee was appointed to wait on the Library Committee. THE ORCHESTRA. In securing Mr Wade for conductor , ana Air xioutiway for deputy, this socii efcy has been fortunate. The standard i of play is improving, and as many as | seventeen have attended practice. Flutes and clarionettes are stil! needed. SPORTS CLUB. | On Monday evening the committee ! met, Mr F. Sisson being in the chair, j Several new members were elected. | The club is out to enrol the whole disj trict as members, and, as the subscrip- ‘ tioti is small and payment permits members to attend all the sports meetings free, there should be no difficulty in getting a large membership. The following officers were appointed for the coming meeting:—Cycling— Judges, Messrs W. J. Waiter, R. J. ! Pugh, R. Hamilton, G. Borgfeldt; i starter, Mr R. Rickerby; timekeeper,
