THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

tO THE EDIT'"' Sir,—So far only one candidate has been nominated for the important position of Mayor of this city, and it is to be hoped that other candidates for the office will soon make their appearance. There are many men in this city who are more capable to fill the position than is the present nominee. It is an unassailable fact that Councillor Flesher has found the position of chairman of the finance committee a task far- too great for him, and this is further borne out by his coming notice of motion to insist that an unnecessary amount of £50,000 at 5$ per cent for unwanted meters, be added to an already heavy loan for water supply-

Like many hundreds of your readers, I had quite expected to see the name of Mr R. B. Owen figuring in this contest, ns this gentleman did great humanitarian work during last winter among the vast body of men then unemployed. With winter again coming on this phase will most likely appear again, and with a sympathetic Mayor much suffering and want can be alleviated. Many also expected to find ex-Coun-cillor Agar offer himself, for this gentleman (when contesting the by-elec-tion at which he was heavily defeated by Mr R. D. Martin) made an announcement that he would be the next Mayor. Will this prophecy be fulfilled, or will the statement prove to be a vainglorious boast? Thanking you for space. —I am, etc., VOX POPULI.
