AMATEUR ATHLETICS
CLASH OF DATES. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 17. There is a clash of dates in athletic meetings which places the Wellington Centre in a difficulty. Otago had been offered February 17 or February 24 for the Dominion championships. while Wellington has the American athletes here on February 17, and also has it* local championships stii] to get off. At a conference Mr Davies, chairman of the New Zealand A.A.A.. suggested that Otago should fix February 24 for the Dominion championships, and that the Wellington meetings s you Id be on February 10 and February 17. but this was objected to as asking too much of tlie public. Tt was then suggested that Wellington would combine the local championships with the American date, if tlic council would halve the profits, but Mr Davies was doubtful if the council had power .to do this, or could afford to do it. in view of the expense it was incurring. Ultimately Mr Davies said that, il Otago did not accept the dates offered, the championships should be hold elsewhere. probably at Wellington. During the discussion it stated that athletic meetings here always returned a handsome profit and. it was alleged, that champion meetings elsewhere would not have been a success . hart for tbe presence of a Wellington team.
