BAIL REFUSED.
f JOHNSONVILLE CASE ADJOURNED. I STATEMENT BY CROWN SOLICITOR. * (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, January 17. , There was an expectant hush in the Magistrate's Court to-day when Daniel Richard Cooper and his wife, Martha Elizabeth Cooper, were called. Both defendants were jointly charged with unlawfully detaining the infant child, iifced ten days, of Hugo Lupi and LilyLister. with intent to deprive its parents of its possession. Daniel Rjchard Cooper was further charged with unlawfully supplying A. Sutherland with a thing, knowingthat it was to be used for an illegal purpose. o Mr P. s. K. Macassev, in asking that £he accused should be remanded until January 24. intimated that he wduld |hject to bail being granted if an application was made 1 Mr L. J. Maule (for Cooper) : I have rfo application to make, j An application for hall whs then made %v Mr P. Jackson, on behalf of Mrs Jjooper. § Mr (Macassev: I most very strongly oppose the granting of bail. as this course might tend to defeat the ends of justice. At various times four illegitimate children have been placed in the possession of the accused, and they have failed to give an account of three of them, and have made contradictory statement concerning the fourth. Besides this, the body of a child has been found buried on premises recently occupied by the defendants. Under these circumstances, if bail were granted, there might be very serious results. 7 The Magistrate (Mr W. G Riddell) : Very well, they are remanded until January 24. Bail for the present will pot be allowed.
