Some surprise was occasioned when the list of re-handicaps for the Manawatu Trotting Club's meeting was found to contain, in addition to jvinners, the names of horses who had only filled minor places at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting last Saturday The authority for this action was contained in a clause in the Manana tu programme, providing that “ a placed horse of any race after declaration of handicaps iuav be re handicapped.” A study of the Rule* of Trotting leaves it extremely doubtful if the club was justified in including such a condition on its programme. Rule 289 says: “AH winners of any race after the handicaps are declared may he re-handicapped.” Rule 302 says : “Tn the case of a dead heat for first place, each owner and each horse shall be deemed a winner and may be re-handicapped.” Rule 321 says: “In case of an objection, until it. has been finally determined, both the horse objeeted to and the horse claimed to have been the winner of Ihe race shall be liable to all penalties which would have heen attached to the winner of the race if no e.bjection had been made, and both horses may be rehandicapped as though each horse had been awinner.” The three rules quoted appear to provide the nntv authority for re-handicapping and it- will he seen that they do not contemplate any pen altv for horses who have finished in the minor place® Tf this view is sound. th*» "Mannwat-u Trotting Club was not justified in including the special rule and the New Zealand Trotting Association was at fault in passing the programme while it contained this provision The position which is taken up by the Manairatu Club s.eems grossly unfair, in any case. The principle of re-handicapping winners requires no justification, as it is fully recognised in ererv branch of sport, hut to penalise a horse who has been unlucky enough to he placed is quite another matter. Forfeits for the Middle Pork Plate and nominations for other events at the Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting will close at eight o clock on Friday night. Scrimmage and harfodale left last night for Trentham. where they will join Winning Hit, Angelo, Wild Hind, and Top Score, who have been quartered there more than a week following their return from the Auckland Racing Club's meeting. J. M’ Com be left last night for the norTh with Sunny Loch, while P M’Gratfc went, at the same time with Raconteur. They are to race at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting. An extensive scheme of course improvements has been taken m hand by the Hororata Racing Club, hut as it will not be completed- for some tim* yet it is understood that the- club will hold this season's race meeting at Riccartbn. Though Income figures as an acceptoi for the Wellington Cup. it is reportec that he will not he at Trentham. thf intention of his owner being to start him in the Takapuna Cup. in which th< opposition will not lie no strong. Negotiations have again been openec l>y a North Island sportsman for th» purchase of The Hawk. Reports from Auckland state, thal the Australian bred horse Alfort is fulfil his engagement at Trentham. Al tort is a brilliant sprinter, judged oi his best Australian Form, which he ha? not yet repeated in New' Zealand. After the race for the Hack Flying Handicap nt the Paliiatua meeting R S. Bagby, the rider of L*Amour, whi filled the rule of runner-up, entered « protest against A. Oliver, tho rider o: the winner. Konibrook, for interference at- the entrance to the straight, but il was dismissed owing to insufficient evi fience. The. Martian gelding Danger Zone who was recently sold to an Austra Han buyer, is now on his way Sydney. So fa.r bis form has only moderate but he is likely to lm proveThe light weight jockey. A G Dixon, who i*> attached to J. H. Jef ferd’s stable, is making satisfactory progress in the Paliiatua Hospital frorr the injuries he received by a fall a' Pahiatua. Stipendiaries M’Mahon an: \\ ilson afterwards examined the tractwhere the lall took place, and fount the going in good order. Tt appeare. horn the stand as if Loyal Arch slipper taking the turn, which was probabJj greasy alter the ram.

Riccarton stables claim four representatives in the Anniversary Handicap, of one mile, at Trentham cn Saturday. 'three of them mot in the Tescheiuaker Handicap at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, when Boadioea finished well in front ol Sunny Loch and Red Gown. Since then Boadioea ha.* been amiss but it is only a question of being at her best for her to beat them again. The other Riccartcn candidate is Vespucci. He has not. done much racing this season, but he is not far from weight for age class when he is right. Cupid on will strip a very fit horse when be goes out for the Wellington Cup on Saturday, as R. J. Mason has given a lot- of attention to the Martian horse lately. Rosed a v was responsible for an exceptionally good performance for about a mile and three-quarters in the New 7 Zealand Cup. Since then, however. he has never shown anvthing like the same form and it locks as if that race knocked him out. He is in the Wellington Cup with a handy weight but he will require to be all right to win and on that score there is no recent assurance, so most people will be content to leave the Solferino gelding alone. Kick Off is one of the latest horses to come into favour for the Wellington Cup. On hi* form lust autumn, when lie won the New Zealand St T.eger and ran second to Amythas in the Trentham Gold Cup. he represents top class oVei- a journey and be will be. galloping when many of his Wellington Cup op ponents are very tired. Peneus was very near the top class among last season's two-year-olds, and if he has struck his best form he will win a race before the Trentham fixture is concluded. A writer in the “New Zealand Her nld ” is responsible for the following:—• Mr A. Hill, course manager for tho Auckland Racing Club, has been granted permission by the committee, upon the application of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, to visit Christchurch and confer with Mr Luttrell, the architect engaged on the construction of the Metropolitan Trotting Club's new course, upon the lay-out and appointments. This is a distinct compliment to Mr Hill, who lias already rendered similar service to various clubs in the south by permission ‘of the Auckland Racing Club's committee, and. moreover, it shows a commendable sporting spirit on the part- of the Auckland Racing Club committee. It is reported from Auckland that Sid Reid, who is still in charge of Cold Steel and the Kilbroney — Sunbird colt, owned by Mr B. L. .Toll, is likely to leave for Australia shortly with some horses owned by Mr W. G. Stead. Whether this can be taken to mean that Mr Stead intends to resume racing again is for the future to reveal, but it would certainly be pleasing to followers of the sport to see the popular yellow jacket and black cap in evidence again at an early date. There would appear to have been a valid excuse for Rational’s unplaced performance in the Auckland Racing Club’s Royal Stakes. It is stated that the gelding got a bit of scoria in the fleshy part of one of his feet some little time before the rare, and that in removing the foreign substance, blood was drawn. In the interval Rational has been on the easy list, and doubts arc expressed as to his being at his lest tor the Wellington summer meeting. The effort to save Night Time, which was injured during the running of the Auckland Hurdle Race, was unsuccessful and the gelding was destroyed Considerable comment has been made as to t-lie cause of fihe accident, says a northern writer, but unfortunately a complaint has not been lodged with the stewards and the outside talk is useless, al thought it is very pronounced. Night. Time gave promise of turning out useful as * jumper and his lo6® is a serious one to bis owner, Mr J. A. Black. Over There, the brother to the wellperformed Gaziquo. by Gazeley— - T'auleen. has proved a very profitable investment since be went to Wept. Australia. At the recent Christmas meeting at Perth, he defeated a good field in the Final Handicap. WANGANUI NOTES. (Special to the “Star ”) WANGANUI, January 17. Amber Tips never looked better and has been galloping well on the track. He will take a power of beating in his engagements at Foxton. Fleeting journeyed through to Fox ton to-day. She has been doing goo 1 work and reads well in the Himitangi Hark Handicap. Erie has shown great pace in private but bap failed to show up in public. The Nassau mare will probably be tried over hurdles Rational is reported to have thrown off the ailment which troubled him at. Ellerslie. and he is expected to bo -it his best again for the Egmont fixture, where his meeting with Tamatete and The Hawk in the weight-for age events should prove a feature. The Stratford Racing Club has not yet paid over the stake won by Sunny Jim at its meeting, the trouble bein'?; over the ownership of the gelding. Moulu is going on remarkably wed and his connections are very confident that, the veteran will win a hurdle race at. Foxton. San Franette looks all the better for racing at Christmas. and has been taken to Foxton for the Hi mi tang' Hack Handicap. M. Gardner leaves to-morrow for Trentham with Wake Up and Ora’s De light. Both fillies have been doing good work and they should run well in their engagements F. Tillev leaves For dell to-morrow with Tamatete, Para and Kinsem. The trio are all tn excellent fettle and if the going is to their liking they will probably win two or three races between them. Enthusiasm and Tukia are bein.? given a spell and they will not be see/i out again until Easier. Malingerer. Battle Song and Explorer have been taken to Trentham. All three are engaged in the HighT A eight Handicaps.
