THE BRIDE ELECT.

DAUGHTER OF FAMOUS SCOTTISH PEER. Lady Elisabeth Bowes-Lyon, the bride-elect, was the lady who was so clearly pointed to in the cablegrams a week ago, announcing the engagement of the Prince of Wales. Evidently her engagement became known, and in the absence of an official announcement some of the London newspapers jumped to the wrong conclusion. The bride-elect was one of Princess Mary’s bridesmaids. She is a daughter of the Earl of Strathmore, one of the oldest Peers of Scotland. The Earldom was created i:i 1677, but the title.of Baron Glamis dates back to 1445. The Scottish Peerage, indeed, is a far more aristocratic body than the Peerage of the United Kingdom. No. Scottish Peerage is less than two hundred and thirty years old. for none have been created since 1690. and as from time to time the old Peerages lapse through failure of heirs, the list of Scottish Peers is ever becoming

smaller. At the time of the Union in 3 707 it was 154 strong. To-day it is but eighty-five, and of these onlysi xteen are elected as Representative Peers. Lady Elisabeth Bowes-Lyon has four brothers and two sisters.
