a former Premier of Franee, M. Alexandre F. Ribot was born at St Omer. in 1842, and is thus eighty years of age. He was admitted to the French Bar in 1864. and was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies in 1878. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs in M. de Freycinet’s Ministry in 1890-93. During that period the Alliance between France and Russia was consummated. He was President of the Cabinet during the stormy period of the Panama case, and be cam© Prime Minister for a second time after the resignation of M.Casimir-i Pcrier. He was Minister of Finance I in 191.4-17, and Prime. Minister during \ a portion of the latter year. During j the last few years lie lias strongly op- i posed the policy of retaliation against religious orders. His most important speeches were delivered on finance and , foreign affairs. He was a member of j the French Academy of Science. MoraL i and Politics, and was a corresponding i Fellow of the British Academv. T i; ' 1.817 he was married to Miss Minnie j Burch, of Chicago. He leaves one son. :
