The New South Wales ladies again knew too much for the New Zealanders on the second day's play at Thorndon courts. The matches were played in a high wind, of which, once they were accustomed to it, the Australians took full advantage. The outstanding match was provided by the meeting of Miss Lance and Alisa Aiacfarlane, the first ladies in each team. Miss Lance did not start well and Alias , Macfar lane's hard hitting tactics forced her into repeated errors. The New Zealand lady took the first, set for the loss of 21 points, scoring 32 points, and led 5-2 in the second. Miss Aiacfarlane had match point repeatedly, but Miss Lance was seen at her best. She took the game after six deuces and evened at five all by chopping and driving and won the third set easily. Miss Howe was off colour against Miss Lloyd, who forced her opponent into errors by the pace of her returns and won easily. Airs Hodges lacked initiative against Mias Gray and paid the penalty bf failure to attack, going down in straight sets, though her opponent was erratic. Afrs Lascelles retired after winning the first set from Airs Scott-Watson without great, difficulty. New Zealand gained the . match by default, their only win. In the doubles Miss Howe and Alias Scott Watson seemed to have a chance when they took the first set 8-6 from Misses Gray and Lloyd, but the Australian pair settled down and though they repeatedly lost service, were too powerful off the ground and clever at the net for their opponents. Miss Lance and Airs Lascelles won from Alias Aiacfarlane and Airs Hodges, mainly on ATiss Alacfarlane’s mistakes. Results:— Afiss Lance beat Alias Aiacfarlane 2-6. 7-5, 6-1. ATrs Lascelles lost to Airs Scott-Watson 6-4 (retired). All's Lloyd beat Aliss Doubles. Aliss Lance and Mrs Lascelles beat Miss Aiacfarlane and Mrs Hodges 6-4. 6-1.
