LEVEL CROSSINGS.

As if to give point to the South Island protest against the dangers of level crossings, a remarkable collision was reported from Te Awamutu at the week-end. A mail service motor-car, with three occupants, dashed into a passing train at a level crossing, throwing a railway truck off the line, and completely smashing the car. That the <hreo occtipants escaped with their lives was simply a miracle. The Press Association message covering the accident stated that there had been many similar accidents at the crossing, which was dangerous, the approach being hidden by buildings. It would be interesting to make a complete collection ot the reports of level crossing accidents Ui other centres, few of which are telegraphed, simply because they are so frequent and commonplace. The matter cannot be allowed to rest where it is. Christchurch, unfortunately, has mor.i 'han its share of level crossings, and the efforts of the Automobile Association to secure protection for the motorists of the province ought to be stimulated by the knowledge that support pf their efforts would be forthcoming from all parts of New Zealand. A united protest by the Automobile Associations of the Dominion would be a timely contribution to the reform movement.
