BAN ON NEGROES AT HARVARD UNIVERSITYBy Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. NEW YORK, January 13. A real sensation has been produced by the action of the Harvard University, America’s premier educational institution, in its alleged discrimination against a negro. Many of the most prominent American negroes are graduates of Harvard, which has been known hitherto to accord equal treatment to whites and blacks. The university recently adopted the plan that all firstyear men must reside in a special dormitory. Tho son of a. negro graduate applied for admission, but President Lowell replied that negroes could not be admitted to this dormitory. He said southern young men would not reside in the same house with negroes, and he pointed out that there wore other dormitories where negroes would be admitted . A wide controversy immediately arose, letters from graduates all over the country pouring in to President Lowell, some protesting and some approving. The Press throughout the country i= also taking side®, some of the northern papers bitterly assailing President Lowell and lamenting the downfall of Harvard ideals.
