.Experiments in the thermal conductivity oi timber i lave recently been carried cut by Mr J. C. Loin as , M.A., and Professor E. Alaraden, who presented the results of their investiga tions to thy; Physics section of the Science Congress at Wellington on Friday. The paper prepared on the subject stated that little information was available. A study of the physical, and chemical properties of timber was not only of practical value, but had considerable interest, and properly conducted in conjunction with microscopic examination of sections should throw valuable light on the details of all structure and division. From the point of view of density, the lighter specimens seemed on the average to have the best conductivity for heat, but insufficient work had yet been done to show any relation between density and conductivity. In one respect the results all agreed: it was clear that the conduction of heat was greatest in the lengi
