i Til© great success attending tin; | Queen G&mival Crowning ceremony ! surprised even those most iutimateuv I concerned. The Mayor (Mr J. Gamble; ! and others taking part, were happy in their choice of remarks, and there was |no hitch of any kind. The greatest praise is due to the ladies who, head i e d by Mrs M’Cl in took, had so tfior- : ougjily prepared the children, that Mr Sweeney s ialxiurs were considerably i lightened. Miss Kennard, Miss Farland, together with Messrs Scarr, I Muirson, and other officials are also deserving of th© greatest praise. Ihe little Queen, Hilda Gib,son, carried herself splendidly lor one so young. I amusing lap*© to childhood occurred when Mr Gamble handed her a dressed doll which she apparently ■ thought more interesting than the crami or sceptre. Songs and other items were rendered by M osdames Leighton. Muirson, Miss Spedding and Messrs Instone and Bishop. Bet tv Innes, os the Lord Chancellor, excelled in her character. The Misses W ilkinson gave a very effective dance : to the accompaniment of “ Th© Sheik ” j The strains of the Russian National Anthem, Mr Bishop’s rendering of “ The Veteran's Song." and. finally the singing of ‘‘God save the King” by tl>e whole audience formed a st-rik--1 mg and effective finale to the pictures que tableau. COUNCIL COMMENTS. The new Leyiond Motor Fire Engine is due to arrive in. \> eilington, on January lb. It wni be assembled in Wellington, and will have three or tour ciays’ trial there. It should uterefore be in New Brighton at the end of January. A discussion at the final meeting of tlie Gala Committee emphasised tlio very urgent need lor conveniences on the beach. Several speakers, not Louncillors. insisted that it v. as only a lair tiling m viewVof the large crowds, especially of women and children, that temporary conveniences at stateu i-pots, should be erected, and this was ngi'ced to. The present position, when if is remembered that anything up to u.OOO people will be on the beach and its vicinity, is little short of scandalous However, the Council and local authori ties are not to blame, but the matter will have to be kept steadily in view ro that legislation will be ensuring that a similar state of affairs will not prevail after this season. A hearty and unanimous vote of thanks was passed to the Mayor, at the final Gala, meeting, for liis interest and close attention to the work of the Gala, which is entirely far the benefit i oiid improvement of the b©acli. A RUNAWAY. A remarkable runaway which raised a serious alarm in Seaview Road while it- lasted, and looked to have all the . dement© of a disastrous crash, occur- | red on Wednesday* morning, but forj tunately ended without serious damage | being done. A half draught horse, in i a tip drav belonging to Mr J. Buxton, j bolted from George Street, and apparently made straight for home. . Near ! Mr Buxton’s entrance, it skidded on i the tram rail, which had the effect of sending it direct towards Hulston’s plate glass windows at full tilt. Fortunately, the tramway post wae in the n ' a .
